International Day of Sign Language Celebrated with Unwavering Commitment to Inclusivity
“A World where Deaf people everywhere can Sign anywhere”
As today marks the day to celebrate the International Day of Sign Language, the National Association of Sign Language interpreters Ghana (NASLIG) is proud to join the global community of the Deaf in celebrating the rich and diverse world of sign languages. This year’s theme, ” A World where Deaf people everywhere can Sign anywhere,” underscores our unwavering commitment to promoting inclusivity, bridging communication gaps, and advocating for the rights of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities.
The International Day of Sign Language was first established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to raise awareness about the importance of sign languages and their role in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is celebrated annually on September 23rd, in honor of the founding of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) in 1951.
Sign languages are unique and invaluable forms of communication that empower Deaf individuals and foster cultural diversity. They are not only essential for Deaf people but also for their families, friends, and communities. NASLIG recognizes the significance of sign languages in facilitating effective communication, education, and employment opportunities, ensuring that no one is left behind.
In celebration of this important day, NASLIG is taking the following initiatives:
Promoting Sign Language Awareness: We are committed to raising awareness about sign languages through workshops, seminars, and online campaigns. We encourage everyone to learn basic sign language gestures to create an inclusive environment.
Advocating for Accessibility: We urge governments, organizations, and institutions in Ghana to prioritize accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. This includes providing sign language interpreters, captioning services, and accessible technologies.
Supporting Deaf Culture: NASLIG stands in solidarity with the Deaf community and their cultural heritage. We promote the recognition and celebration of Deaf culture, history, and achievements.
Collaborating for Change: We actively collaborate with The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), policymakers, and stakeholders to ensure that sign language rights are recognized and upheld globally.
Providing Communication Access: We work tirelessly to empower Deaf individuals by providing resources, education, and support for personal and professional development.
On this International Day of Sign Language, let us all reaffirm our commitment to making the world more inclusive, where sign languages are embraced and celebrated as vital components of our diverse linguistic landscape.
Join us in celebrating this day by learning a few sign language phrases, sharing your support on social media using the hashtag #SignLanguageDay, and advocating for a world where everyone, regardless of their hearing ability, can access information, education, and opportunities.
